Gas struts, also known as gas springs or gas dampers, are versatile mechanical components used in a wide array of applications across various industries due to their ability to provide controlled motion, support weight, and enhance safety. Here are some key areas where gas struts are commonly used:
Automotive Industry:
- Hoods, trunks, and hatchbacks: Providing smooth opening and closing and keeping them securely open.
- Convertible roofs: Ensuring effortless operation.
- Tailgates: Assisting in lifting and lowering.
- Glove compartments: Providing controlled opening.
- Adjustable seats: Enabling easy height and tilt adjustments.
- Pop-up roofs and ski boxes: Offering convenient access.
Furniture:
- Office chairs: For height and tilt adjustments, enhancing ergonomics.
- Cabinet doors: Providing soft and controlled opening and closing, especially for overhead cabinets.
- Storage beds: Assisting in lifting the mattress base to access storage space.
- Desks: Enabling adjustable height and rising desktop features.
- Recliners and sofas: For smooth adjustment of backrests and footrests.
- Bar cabinets: For controlled opening of hinged doors.
Industrial Equipment and Machinery:
- Machine guards and enclosures: Providing safe and easy access for maintenance.
- Access panels and doors: Ensuring controlled opening and preventing slamming.
- Agricultural equipment: Used in various applications like tractor doors, hatches, and implements.
- Construction machinery: In cabs, hatches, and engine compartments.
- Manufacturing equipment: For lifting, positioning, and counterbalancing components.
- Toolboxes and lids: Providing easy and secure access.
- Conveyor systems: For controlled movement and adjustments.
Transportation:
- Commercial vehicles: In loading flaps, storage boxes, and movable partitions.
- Caravans and RVs: For windows, doors, and storage compartments.
- Marine applications: On boat hatches, access doors, and engine covers (often using stainless steel struts for corrosion resistance).
- Aircraft: In cabin doors, cargo doors, and other access panels (often with specific certifications).
Medical Equipment:
- Hospital beds: For adjustable height and positioning.
- Patient lifters: Providing smooth and controlled movement.
- Examination tables and chairs: For easy adjustments.
Other Applications:
- Windows and hatches: As you mentioned, for controlled opening and holding in place (e.g., awning windows, roof windows).
- Leisure and sports equipment: In gym equipment, tanning beds, etc.
- Luggage and cases: For controlled opening and support of lids.
- Vending machines: For access doors and internal mechanisms.
- Signage: For easy opening and maintenance of illuminated signs.
In essence, gas struts are used anywhere a controlled lifting, lowering, holding, or dampening motion is required, offering benefits like ease of use, safety, and durability. The specific type and force of the gas strut are chosen based on the application’s weight, size, and desired movement characteristics.

“Great product. Received next day! I used these to repair an eye-level kitchen cabinet that has its door hinged at the top. Just replaced the worn out struts with some minor modifications to the fixing eyes as they were slightly different from the original ones now obsolete. The door works perfectly and stays up when opened. I was so pleased with this, I ordered 4 more to fix the other cabinets in our kitchen, saving £s.”

ABOUT US
Length and Force Calculation
How to Calculate the Gas Strut Length and Force Required is what we believe to be the simplest way to work out the pressure required for gas struts being installed to keep open any lid, door, roof window, awning, etc.
In general, the length to choose for gas struts is about 55% of the height of the door you are trying to keep open.
For example, if you have a door that is 1000mm in height, a 550mm long gas strut would be about right. In simple terms, we are talking half the door height plus a bit when determining the optimal gas strut length.
Please use the formula on the left to calculate the force required for your gas struts.
